Facts About the Mayor's Home Town of Garland, TX

Settlers arrived in 1850, and the community was launched in 1874 with a store and later a corn mill on the banks of Duck Creek (settlement took the same name).

Due to a dispute over two railroads, the government moved the post office and renamed the town Garland after then Attorney General A.H. Garland.

Garland was incorporated in 1891. It is located in the northeast corner of Dallas County.

Garland entered into the power and water supply business in 1923, and Garland Power and Light is now the third largest municipal electric system in Texas and the thirty-ninth largest in the United States.

Population of Garland in 2000 was 215,768.

Mayor Kelley's Texas Roots

The Mayor's most recent hobby involves family history. She has been particularly interested in researching ancestors that lived in Texas prior to statehood.

Kelley's fourth great-grandfather, George Whitfield Terrell, moved to Texas in 1839, eventually settling in San Augustine County. He served as Attorney General of the republic under Sam Houston.

Look for additional family history information to be posted soon.
